Invisible Dog Fence

Invisible dog fences have become popular these days because of various reasons like concerns on the development of a certain subdivision, particularly in terms of aesthetics.  Since building a fence is not always considered something that will improve the overall look of a village, homeowners are resorting to the use of invisible fencing systems.

These fences make use of underground wires that carry a current, while the dog wears a collar.  When the dog gets too near to the perimeter the collar will buzz, preventing the animal from going any further.

There are many factors that a property owner needs to look into before installing an invisible fence.  First, not all dogs are suited for this system. Long coated dogs may need to be shaved to allow the electric current to run on their skin.  Dogs who have loose skin folds located underneath the chin may also be not suited for this system since they have less nerve cells in that area, meaning they will not be affected by any electrical current.  Obviously if the current does not affect the dog, the entire system will be useless.

The use of this type of fencing can also have a negative effect on the psychology of the dog.  Animal experts agree that puppies have fear stages, which could have an effect on how they react to invisible fence systems.  The fear stages occur on the eight week and eight month for most puppies.  Thus when the puppy is subjected to electric or invisible fencing system, chances are that the animal will be traumatized.  Thus it can even lead to the dog not wanting to go outside at all.  Dogs that are by nature timid and submissive will also react in the same way.  Owners need to be there for their pets, especially when they are being trained on the rudiments of the invisible fencing system.  They need to step in when the dog professes adverse reactions to the system.

Another downside is that invisible fences cannot guarantee protection against stray dogs or animals outside of the perimeter.  There have been cases wherein the animal inside have been attacked by wild animals since the system failed to prevent the entry of wild animals and stray dogs.

Thus people who are pondering on the use of invisible fences need to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of using the said protection system for their dogs. We're not saying this product is a bad idea, just be sure you do a lot of research and consider all the angles before making the investment.
